Maligne Lake is about 22 kilometres long and is described as the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. Spirit Island, the tiny wooded island that appears in so many photographs, is reached by boat rather than on a hiking trail, so a hike here focuses on the lake's shoreline, valley and surrounding peaks.
Medicine Lake, on the way, is sometimes called the Disappearing Lake: it drains through underground channels, and its level changes with the season, sometimes dropping to almost nothing in winter. In July 2024 a wildfire burned through the Jasper area, including parts of Maligne Canyon, so trail conditions in the valley can differ from older guidebooks.
A guide who has lived in the park for decades can read those changes: where the forest has opened up, which trails are in good shape, and where wildlife tends to be at a given hour.
