Jasper National Park was established as Jasper Forest Park in 1907, renamed a national park in 1930, and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. In March 2011 it became a Dark-Sky Preserve, at about 11,228 square kilometres one of the largest in the world, which reflects how little artificial light reaches its valleys after dark.
That same quiet is why evening drives work for wildlife. Elk, bighorn sheep and bears tend to be most active near dawn and dusk, when the roads and meadows around the townsite are less busy. Sightings are never guaranteed, and bears in particular should be watched from the vehicle.
The 2024 wildfire altered some habitat around Jasper, but the animals remain widespread across the valley.
