The Athabasca Glacier has retreated roughly 1.5 kilometres since the late 19th century, averaging about 13.5 metres a year between 1870 and 1981. Parks Canada markers along the road to the upper parking lot show where the ice reached at different dates, and the ridges between the toe and the highway each mark a pause in that retreat.
The Icefield Centre opened in 1996. Had it existed in its present location during the Little Ice Age maximum around 1840, the ice would have scoured it from the landscape.
Walking near the toe gives a ground-level look at the moraines and meltwater, but stepping onto the glacier itself is only safe with appropriate equipment and guides, so the tour's three hikes concentrate on trails and viewpoints around it.
