About This Tour

A private full-day excursion with private transportation to the geographic point where the Marañón and Ucayali Rivers meet to form the Amazon River itself, combined with wildlife watching for pink and gray dolphins and recreational piranha fishing inside Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. This is a private, full-day tour with private transportation and native guidance from start to finish. Unlike shorter boat rides, this trip reaches the actual confluence point where the Amazon River is born, inside the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve covers about 2,080,000 hectares in Loreto, in the land between the Marañón to the north and the Ucayali to the south. The two rivers meet at the reserve's edge, and from there the river is known in Peru as the Amazon.

Geographers debate where the Amazon 'really' begins; the Peruvian convention treats the Marañón-Ucayali junction as the birth of the main river, while the true headwaters of the system are far upstream in the Andes. This tour visits the junction, which is the point Peru itself recognizes.

The reserve is reached by road from Iquitos to Nauta, about two hours, followed by boat, which is why this is a long full-day trip. It is also known as a major refuge for river wildlife, including dolphins.
