About This Tour
A tour visiting the Kukama, an indigenous community living near the Nanay River, followed by a stop at the Pilpintuwasi butterfly garden and wildlife rescue center, then an afternoon of sport piranha fishing on the Amazon's tributaries. This tour includes a real visit to a Kukama community along the Nanay River, approached respectfully as a cultural exchange rather than a staged performance, before continuing to the butterfly garden and a hands-on piranha fishing session.
The Kukama-Kukamiria are an Indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon whose language belongs to the Tupi-Guarani family. Communities are spread along the Huallaga, lower Marañón, lower Ucayali, Amazon and lower Nanay rivers, with a population estimated at around 20,000.
Their language is endangered: only a small share of the people still speak it, mostly elders, and most have shifted to Spanish. That context matters when you visit; this is a living community, not a performance, which is why the tour is framed as a respectful exchange.
The butterfly garden and rescue center is on the Nanay River, and piranha fishing on a tributary closes the day with something hands-on and lighthearted.
