The Iquitos area is one of the best-known birding regions in Peru for a particular reason: forests growing on ancient white sand harbor birds found almost nowhere else. Surveys near the city documented four species new to science plus several new to Peru, among them the Iquitos Gnatcatcher, the Ancient Antwren and the Allpahuayo Antbird.
The Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, created in 2004 near the city, protects the largest known concentration of white-sand forest in Peruvian Amazonia. The Iquitos Gnatcatcher is critically endangered, with only a handful of pairs known.
Loreto as a whole has been recorded with over a thousand bird species, a little more than half of Peru's total. A custom itinerary lets you choose between specialties of white-sand forest, river islands, or more general birding.
