This route stays entirely within Honduras, running from the capital Tegucigalpa to the north coast towns of Tela and La Ceiba with your own private driver and vehicle throughout.
Lancetilla Botanical Garden was founded by the United Fruit Company in 1926, with botanist Wilson Popenoe choosing the valley for its soils and microclimates. It covers roughly 1,680 hectares, holds more than 1,200 plant species by most accounts, and is described as the only botanical garden in Honduras. It sits at the edge of the much larger Pico Bonito National Park, over 100,000 hectares of rainforest and cloud forest.
Tela was declared a municipality in 1876, and Garifuna communities such as Triunfo de la Cruz are nearby; Garifuna settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. La Ceiba, where the route ends, is the main ferry and air gateway to the Bay Islands.
