About This Tour

A private guide and driver walk you through Old Havana and the real Hemingway landmarks — El Floridita, a cigar factory, and the Hotel Nacional — built around your own interests. This tour is genuinely tailored per traveler — your guide asks what you want to see and builds the day around it — so the exact mix of stops below reflects what past private groups have actually visited, not a fixed script every guest follows identically.

El Floridita opened in 1817 as La Piña de Plata on the corner of Obispo and Monserrate streets. Catalan bartender Constantino Ribalaigua started there in 1914, became owner in 1918 and is credited with inventing the frozen daiquiri in the early 1930s. Hemingway's often-quoted line, usually given as his mojito at the Bodeguita del Medio and his daiquiri at the Floridita, is displayed on a plaque.

Hemingway also bought Finca Vigía outside the city in 1940, the property where he wrote The Old Man and the Sea (1951), inspired by the fishermen of nearby Cojímar. Earlier he lived in the Hotel Ambos Mundos on Obispo Street, where he began For Whom the Bell Tolls.

The Hotel Nacional opened on 30 December 1930, designed by the firm McKim, Mead & White. It still bears marks from a 1933 revolt, and the grounds contain tunnels and gun positions from the Cuban Missile Crisis, which makes it a stop in its own right.
