Parque Seminario, the flat, tree-shaded square where this tour spends its first unhurried stretch, has changed names almost as often as the city around it has changed eras. In the colonial period it was the Plaza de Armas, the city's parade ground; by the mid-1800s, with an elaborate eight-pointed star set into its paving, it was known as Plaza de la Estrella; a statue of Simón Bolívar later gave it the name Parque Bolívar, before a local benefactor, Manuel Suárez Seminario, funded a French-style redesign around the turn of the century and the park finally took the name it carries today. None of that history requires much walking to take in — the park's shaded benches and gravel paths, with resident green iguanas draped overhead or dozing in the sun, make it one of the most comfortable stops on the whole route.
Just across the square, the Metropolitan Cathedral — formally the Cathedral of Saint Peter — rewards the unhurried look this tour allows. The building standing today isn't the original: Guayaquil's first cathedral was a wooden structure lost to fire, and the neo-Gothic cathedral seen now was built between 1924 and 1937, with 126 individual stained-glass panels depicting apostles and patriarchs set into its windows. Seeing that level of detail properly takes time to actually look rather than just pass by, which is exactly the pace this tour is built around.
The stretch of riverside boardwalk this tour covers is part of the Malecón, Guayaquil's fully paved promenade along the Guayas River, built with wide, obstacle-free walkways and regular benches specifically because it was designed as a public gathering space rather than a hiking route — genuinely comfortable ground to cover without rushing. Taking in the river traffic and the gardens along the way, at whatever pace suits you, is really the point of this stop.
