The tour's name is a nod to Guayaquil's old nickname, "the Pearl of the Pacific" — a phrase that has nothing to do with literal pearls. It dates back to the port's booming 19th- and early-20th-century trade years, when civic leaders and local boosters used it to describe the city as a glittering commercial jewel on the Pacific coast. Foreign sailors passing through at the time sometimes used far less flattering language for the same humid, disease-prone port, before major sanitation campaigns in the early 1900s cleaned the city up — a contrast local guides enjoy pointing out once you're standing in the restored, genuinely handsome downtown of today.
A guide with real local knowledge usually works in time at Cerro Santa Ana and the Las Peñas neighborhood, Guayaquil's oldest, dating to the mid-16th century. The pastel-painted houses that give the hillside its famous postcard look aren't colonial originals — they're largely a 19th-century rebuild after a series of fires swept through the area, and the neighborhood only took its current, carefully restored form after a city-led renovation project between 2002 and 2008. Climbing the 444 numbered steps to the lighthouse and chapel at the summit is one of the few places in the city where you get a full 360-degree view back over the Guayas River.
Because this is a private, flexibly-routed tour rather than a fixed-stop itinerary, your guide can linger in the back streets of Las Peñas, pop into one of its small art galleries, or shift the pace toward the riverfront and historic core depending on what's actually holding your interest that day.
