The canyoning takes place near Bucay, roughly a 90-minute drive east of Guayaquil, where the land begins its climb into the Andean foothills and the humid lowland heat gives way to the cooler, mist-wrapped La Esperanza cloud forest reserve. That steep elevation gradient is exactly what carves the area's terrain into dozens of waterfalls — Bucay is often cited as having more than 40 of them — rather than the gentler rivers typical of the surrounding coastal plain.
The route generally works through a few of the area's named falls: Chorrera del Amor, a roughly 30-meter drop suited to a first rappel, Las Mellizas at around 45 meters, and Isabela, Bucay's tallest at roughly 90 meters. Canyoning itself means descending the waterfall by rope rather than hiking around it — a mix of controlled rappelling, swimming through the plunge pools, and sliding down natural rock chutes worn smooth by the water, with a professional guide managing the ropes and safety gear at every stop.
The cloud forest itself is worth slowing down for between descents: guayacán, matapalo (strangler fig), and laurel trees here are draped in orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and moss, a direct result of the near-constant mist that settles over this elevation band and makes the whole reserve feel noticeably different from the drier lowlands closer to Guayaquil.
