Guanajuato's UNESCO World Heritage status — inscribed in 1988 as the 'Historic Town of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines' — is tied directly to the view this tour is built around. Between roughly 1550 and 1800, Guanajuato's mines produced more silver than any other location in the Americas, and that wealth built a city packed into a steep ravine, with colorful houses stacked up the hillsides in place of the orderly grid most Spanish colonial towns followed. The result is a town with very little flat ground and an unusual number of genuine elevated vantage points — exactly what makes rooftop terraces such a natural way to see it.
This tour meets at Plaza de los Ángeles, a small, colorful square with its own bit of local color: it sits directly at the entrance to the Callejón del Beso, Guanajuato's famous Alley of the Kiss, making it one of the city's more atmospheric and often-crowded little corners before you even head up to the first terrace.
From each of the three terraces, the same stacked rooftops read differently — the Basílica's yellow-and-red dome from one angle, Teatro Juárez's bronze-muse-topped roofline from another, the hillside houses climbing in every direction from a third. Guanajuato's most famous single overlook is the hilltop Pípila Monument above the city, but this tour takes the more intimate route: three separate, less crowded real terraces, each with time to sit, have a drink, and actually take in the view rather than just snap a photo and move on.
