Cerro del Cubilete rises to roughly 2,579 meters above sea level in the Bajío region, and it's commonly cited as marking the geographic center of the Mexican Republic — which is a large part of why this specific mountaintop, rather than any other peak in the country, was chosen as the site for a monument meant to represent Christ's kingship over the whole nation.
The monument has a complicated history. An earlier version was destroyed in 1928, during the anticlerical campaigns of President Plutarco Elías Calles's government — the same period that fueled the Cristero War. The current Cristo Rey statue, with a base designed by the architect Nicolás Mariscal, was rebuilt afterward and completed by around 1950; the bronze figure itself stands roughly 20 to 23 meters tall, depending on the source, making it one of the tallest Christ statues anywhere in Latin America.
The Giant Rosary is a genuinely new addition to the sanctuary grounds at the base of the mountain, in the nearby municipality of Silao — a monumental devotional rosary, blessed by regional church leaders, whose full layout runs close to 5 kilometers, with individual beads weighing close to two tons apiece, a large central crucifix piece, and a rosette bearing the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It's a striking, recently built complement to a site people may already know from the Cristo Rey statue alone, and both are set within the same peaceful sanctuary grounds described in the tour's own itinerary.
From the summit, the views really are as described — sweeping panoramas across the mountains and valleys of the Bajío region, one of central Mexico's most agriculturally important areas, with the surrounding countryside visible for miles in every direction on a clear day.
