About This Tour

A private 8-9 hour day combining the pre-Columbian circular pyramids of Guachimontones with a visit to an artisanal tequila distillery in the town of Tequila. Alongside a private guide, this day starts at the pre-Columbian archaeological site of Guachimontones, known for its round pyramid structures, then continues to an artisanal tequila distillery before visiting the town of Tequila itself.

Guachimontones occupies about 217 acres above the town of Teuchitlán and was found in 1970 by Mexican art historian Acelia García and American archaeologist Phil Weigand. Its circular stepped pyramids, set inside circular building complexes, are unlike the square pyramids of central Mexico.

Weigand named the culture the Teuchitlán tradition. It is thought to have existed from around 300 BCE until perhaps 900 CE, peaking between roughly 200 BCE and 350 CE. The tallest pyramid, in Circle 2, rises about 18 metres.

The day then moves to Tequila, where the same volcanic landscape that supported the ancient settlement now supports agave. It is a rare chance to connect two eras of the region in one trip.
