Tapalpa sits at about 2,100 metres in the foothills of the Sierra Madre, noticeably cooler than Guadalajara. It was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2002, said to be the first in Jalisco and among the first in Mexico.
The area was home to an Indigenous settlement called Atlaccos when the Spanish arrived in the early 1500s, and a colony was started between 1531 and 1532. It was not until 1825 that the population grew large enough to be recognised as a pueblo.
Las Piedrotas, also called the Valley of the Enigmas, are enormous porous rocks up to about 40 metres high, roughly five kilometres from town. Their origin is debated and various theories circulate, so treat any single explanation your guide offers as one among several.
