Jackson Lake, where this evening ends with dinner on the shore, is the park's largest lake: about 15 miles long, with a surface elevation near 6,772 feet. Its level is controlled by Jackson Lake Dam, a concrete and earth structure finished in 1916 after an earlier log-crib dam failed in 1910, so the lake you see today is a glacial lake enlarged by engineering.
The Teton Range runs about 40 miles, and the Grand Teton itself reaches 13,775 feet. At golden hour the light rakes across the east face of the range, which is why photographers favor these stops late in the day rather than at midday.
Evening is also a productive time for wildlife. Elk, bison and moose tend to move toward feeding areas around dusk, though your guide can only watch for them, not promise them. As the sun drops behind the peaks the temperature falls quickly even in summer, so a warm layer is worth packing.
