The barns of Mormon Row are one of the quieter stories in the park. Mormon families from the Salt Lake region began settling here in the late 1890s, eventually working 27 homesteads close together so they could share labor, and dug miles of irrigation ditches from the Gros Ventre River to water their fields. The district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, and at first light the surviving barns sit directly in front of the Teton skyline.
Jenny Lake takes its name from Jenny, the Shoshone woman who married Richard "Beaver Dick" Leigh in 1863; the two helped the 1872 Hayden expedition, which named Jenny and Leigh lakes for them. The lake itself is held in place by a glacial moraine left about 12,000 years ago, and it is a good place to see how dramatically the range rises from the valley floor.
Schwabacher Landing rewards an early start for a different reason: beaver activity along the Snake River keeps the side channels and ponds calm, which is why the Teton reflections here are so often glassy at dawn. Wildlife is most active in these same early hours, so the drive doubles as a spotting window for moose, elk and bison. Sightings are never guaranteed.
