Oxbow Bend is named for the bow of an ox yoke, and geologically an oxbow is a river meander that has been cut off from the main channel. Here the Snake River curves toward the highway turnout, and on calm mornings Mount Moran is mirrored in the water. Moose browse the willows, and white pelicans, trumpeter swans and eagles are regular visitors.
Signal Mountain rises to 7,727 feet, and a roughly five-mile summit road climbs about 800 feet to two overlooks. Jackson Point looks west over Jackson Lake and the Teton Range, while the Signal Mountain overlook faces east across Antelope Flats toward the Gros Ventre Mountains.
Jackson Lake Lodge, designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood at the urging of John D. Rockefeller Jr., opened in 1955 and is regarded as a turning point from rustic to modern design in national park architecture. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2003.
