Grand Teton National Park was established in 1929 and enlarged in 1950 to take in much of Jackson Hole National Monument, bringing the park to roughly 310,000 acres. That mix of mountains, sagebrush flats and river bottomland is why one park can hold moose, elk, bison, pronghorn, bears and bald eagles in a single day.
One of the most remarkable animals here is the pronghorn. A herd of a few hundred spends summer in the park and migrates about 150 miles to the Upper Green River Basin each fall along the "Path of the Pronghorn," the first federally recognized wildlife migration corridor, designated in 2008. It is among the longest overland mammal migrations in the lower 48 states.
Park rules ask visitors to stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from other wildlife, which is why professional spotting scopes make such a difference on a day like this. A group capped at five lets the guide hold a position patiently rather than keep moving.
