This is a private, naturalist-guided tour for your own group, with binoculars, a spotting scope, and field guides provided. The real highlight is a horse-drawn sleigh ride out onto the National Elk Refuge, home to one of the largest wintering elk herds in North America, alongside a genuine chance of spotting bald eagles, coyotes, and wolves elsewhere in the valley. A substantial hot lunch is included. Because the sleigh ride depends on the refuge's winter operating season (typically mid-December through early April), this tour is only available during that window; ask your Voyzo travel advisor to confirm current dates.

The National Elk Refuge was created in 1912 in response to severe winters and shrinking habitat that were starving thousands of elk in Jackson Hole, after homesteaders and locals had begun feeding the animals. Today it covers nearly 25,000 acres on the valley floor.
Wintering herds on the refuge typically number in the thousands, commonly cited at 6,000 to 7,000 or more, although managers have treated about 5,000 as the target for a healthy herd. Horse-drawn sleigh rides run from mid-December to early April and last roughly an hour, putting you close to elk without disturbing them.
Winter conditions also change what else you can see: bald eagles, coyotes and sometimes wolves are watched for elsewhere in the valley. Dress for real cold, since open sleighs offer little shelter, and treat any wildlife sighting as a bonus rather than a promise.
