The Teton Range is often called North America's youngest mountain range, and the Teton Fault along its eastern base has displaced rock by roughly 30,000 feet, most of it probably within the last nine million years or so. Yet the oldest rocks at the foot of the peaks are around 2.7 billion years old, among the oldest exposed in any national park.
That contrast is the geology your guide can point out between wildlife stops, from glacially carved lakes to the sage flats where bison and pronghorn graze. Dawn and dusk are the hours when many large animals move between feeding and resting areas, which is the reason for the flexible start time.
Choosing between the two is mostly a question of light and energy: dawn tends to be quieter on the roads, while dusk fits easily after a day elsewhere. Young children often cope better with the dusk option, and a private vehicle lets you stop and wait quietly when an animal appears.
