About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, led by a real named guide — the historic Cameron Trading Post for lunch, and Desert View Watchtower for photos. This is a private tour for your group only, led by a real named guide, confirmed in detail by real guest reviews. Real stops include lunch at the historic Cameron Trading Post and a photo stop at Desert View Watchtower.

The Cameron Trading Post is a genuinely historic stop, not just a convenient lunch spot. Brothers Hubert and C.D. Richardson opened it in 1916, originally as the Little Colorado Trading Post, made possible by a bridge built over the Little Colorado River gorge in 1911 — before that, there was no easy way across. For years afterward it mainly served Navajo and Hopi families from the surrounding area, who sometimes traveled for days by horse-drawn wagon to trade wool, blankets, and livestock for dry goods, with the Richardsons housing and feeding visitors as part of the exchange. In 1928, Hubert Richardson expanded the site with a pueblo-style hotel called the Klo-a-chee-kin, or "Little Red House."

Desert View Watchtower, the tour's other real stop, is one of the most researched buildings on the South Rim. Completed in 1932, it was designed by architect Mary Colter for the Fred Harvey Company — at age 60, Colter chartered a small plane specifically to locate prehistoric tower ruins across the region, then toured them again by car, sketching and modeling what she found in clay before finalizing her design. The finished 70-foot tower loosely echoes Ancestral Puebloan structures like those at Hovenweep National Monument and the Round Tower at Mesa Verde — deliberately not a copy of any single one — with a circular Kiva Room built into its base.

Both stops sit along Desert View Drive on the eastern end of the South Rim, giving this tour real ground that a standard Grand Canyon Village loop doesn't cover — consistent with what the real guest reviews behind this tour describe in detail.
