This tour's full day at the South Rim starts in a place with its own distinct geological story: Sedona's famous red rock comes from the Schnebly Hill Formation, a band of sandstone roughly 800 to 1,000 feet thick that was laid down during the Permian period, somewhere around 250 to 300 million years ago, near the shoreline of an ancient shallow sea. The red color itself comes from hematite — iron oxide — that stained what would otherwise be plain white quartz sandstone as the sediment settled and hardened over millions of years.
That timeline actually places Sedona's red rock in roughly the same geological period as the Kaibab Limestone that caps the Grand Canyon's own South Rim, itself laid down under a shallow sea around 270 million years ago. But the canyon exposes a far deeper slice of time than Sedona does: descending from the rim toward the Colorado River, the rock gets progressively older, all the way down to the Vishnu Schist at the bottom, dated to nearly two billion years old. And despite all that ancient rock, the canyon itself is a young landform — most geologists put the Colorado River's work carving through it at only the last five to six million years.
The most direct drive from Sedona to the South Rim covers roughly 115 to 120 miles and takes about two hours, typically via SR-89A, I-17, and I-40 before turning north on SR-64. A longer, more scenic alternative runs north out of Sedona through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff before continuing on to the canyon — adding time to the drive, but trading the interstate for a route through pine forest and canyon walls that's a real destination in its own right.
