The route north from the Phoenix-Scottsdale area to the Grand Canyon's South Rim follows one of Arizona's most dramatic drives: the roughly 15-mile stretch of Highway 89A through Oak Creek Canyon, a federally designated National Scenic Byway between Sedona and Flagstaff. The road climbs from around 4,200 feet at the canyon floor to nearly 6,460 feet at the rim — a gain of about 2,200 feet — following the creek bed for the first stretch before switching up a series of tight hairpin turns along the canyon's eastern wall.
Door to door, the full route from the Phoenix area through Sedona, up Oak Creek Canyon, and on to the South Rim runs somewhere around 230 to 250 miles depending on the exact path taken, with the Oak Creek Canyon stretch alone adding roughly 40 minutes to an hour of slow, scenic switchback driving on top of the highway miles. That's the real reason this tour is built around a 12-to-13-hour day — it's genuinely covering two distinct, worthwhile destinations, not padding a straight there-and-back to the canyon.
Along the way, the drive through Sedona passes some of the area's most recognizable formations — Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte among them — carved from the same red sandstone that gives the whole region its color, visible right from Highway 179 without needing a separate stop. It's a genuine two-destination day, which helps explain both the real 302 reviews behind this tour and its consistently full-day length.
