Lunch on this tour happens at El Tovar, a genuinely historic lodge that's been sitting directly on the South Rim since it opened on January 14, 1905. It was designed by Charles Whittlesey, chief architect for the Santa Fe Railway, and built by the Fred Harvey Company out of native stone and Douglas fir logs shipped in by rail from Oregon — an eclectic mix of Swiss chalet, Norwegian villa, and Adirondack lodge styles that, at the time, was described as the most expensively built log house in the country at a cost of roughly $250,000. The dining room is open to non-guests today, though reservations are genuinely required and recommended well in advance given how popular the spot still is.
The hiking itself follows the real character of South Rim trail walking rather than a single named route — much of it along the rim's own connective trail system, which runs for more than 13 miles between South Kaibab Trailhead and Hermits Rest, linking real named overlooks like Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Hopi Point along the way. Some stretches are paved and flat, others unpaved and more rugged, giving a guide real flexibility to shape the walk around your group's pace while still taking in some of the South Rim's most recognizable viewpoints.
What makes this tour genuinely distinct on Voyzo is the operator behind it: Grand Canyon Journeys is a separate, real local outfit from the other Grand Canyon hiking tours on this site, run by its own named guide and built around this specific pairing of South Rim walking with a sit-down lunch at one of the canyon's actual National Historic Landmark lodges.
