However this day unfolds for your group, it ends at one of the largest canyons on Earth: the Grand Canyon runs roughly 278 miles along the Colorado River, with an average depth of about a mile and a rim-to-rim width that ranges from around 10 miles up to 18 miles at its widest point. Despite that scale, geologists generally date the canyon itself — as a landform carved by the Colorado River — to only the last five or six million years, which is relatively recent by the standards of the much older rock it cuts through.
This private tour can begin from either Sedona or Flagstaff, and the two starting points genuinely differ in distance. From Sedona, the drive to the South Rim covers roughly 115 to 120 miles and takes about two to two and a half hours, typically routed north on SR-89A, then I-17 and I-40, before turning north again on SR-64. From Flagstaff, the trip is considerably shorter — about 79 miles and 90 minutes — which is part of why Flagstaff has become the single most common base for Grand Canyon visitors, hosting the majority of the park's more than six million annual guests at some point in their trip.
The South Rim itself sits atop the Kaibab Limestone, a roughly 270-million-year-old layer laid down under a shallow sea near the end of the Paleozoic Era — it's the youngest rock exposed anywhere in the canyon. Descend toward the river, though, and the exposed rock gets progressively older with every layer, down to the Vishnu Schist at the bottom, dated to nearly two billion years old. Few places on Earth let you see that much geological time stacked into one view, which is why a private guide who actually knows the route tends to matter more here than at most destinations — there's a real difference between someone who can point at the canyon and someone who can explain what you're actually looking at.
