Overview

A local guide walks you through Granada's colonial center — its cathedral, fortress, and historic convent — before a horse-drawn carriage ride out to scenic streets beyond the main square.

Adapted from a small-group experience — Voyzo runs this exclusively as a private tour for your group only. The route stays entirely within Granada's colonial city itself, tracing its real founding-era history and architecture on foot before a horse-drawn carriage ride — genuinely different ground from the brief city-tour stop that opens Voyzo's multi-day Nicaragua itineraries.

About This Tour

A local guide walks you through Granada's colonial center — its cathedral, fortress, and historic convent — before a horse-drawn carriage ride out to scenic streets beyond the main square. Adapted from a small-group experience — Voyzo runs this exclusively as a private tour for your group only. The route stays entirely within Granada's colonial city itself, tracing its real founding-era history and architecture on foot before a horse-drawn carriage ride — genuinely different ground from the brief city-tour stop that opens Voyzo's multi-day Nicaragua itineraries.

Granada was founded on April 21, 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. It is often called the oldest colonial city in Nicaragua and among the oldest in the Americas on its original site, though not the first mainland settlement.

The Convento San Francisco was first built in 1529 and was destroyed by Henry Morgan in 1679 and again by William Walker in 1856, which is why much of what stands today is later rebuilding. Fortaleza La Pólvora was begun in 1748 to guard munitions, and the butter-yellow cathedral on Parque Central was first built in 1583 and has been rebuilt several times.

A horse-drawn carriage suits the city's flat grid and wide streets and takes in neighbourhoods like Xalteva, away from the main plaza.
