Lake McDonald is the largest lake in Glacier National Park, about 10 miles long, more than a mile wide, and roughly 470 feet deep, filling a valley shaped by glaciers and erosion. Apgar Village at its western end is the park's busiest gateway, with a National Park Service visitor center, so the tour starts where most visitors first meet the park.
Outside the park boundary, Hungry Horse Dam on the South Fork of the Flathead River was completed in July 1953. At 564 feet tall it was among the highest concrete dams in the world when finished, and it created Hungry Horse Reservoir, which sets the day's drive apart from a park-only visit.
Because the itinerary is tailored to your group, your guide can shift the balance between lake time, the river, and the dam depending on weather and interests.
