The east side is a different country from Lake McDonald. Goat Lick Overlook, on US Highway 2 about two miles southeast of Walton, looks over a clay-and-mineral bank on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River where mountain goats come down to lick salts; wildlife viewing is usually best from spring into August.
Marias Pass, at 5,213 feet, is the lowest crossing of the Continental Divide between Canada and central New Mexico. The railroad surveyor John F. Stevens explored it in 1889 for the Great Northern Railway.
Two Medicine is the Blackfeet's 'Backbone of the World', historically used for vision quests; Sinopah Mountain rises at the head of the lake, and the 1914 Two Medicine Chalet, now the camp store, is a National Historic Landmark. St. Mary Lake rounds out the day.
