Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge has a genuinely long working history behind it: salmon fishermen first built a crossing to the small island here in 1755, and the fishery boomed through the 19th and early 20th centuries, landing up to 300 salmon a day at its peak before pollution and overfishing ended the industry for good in 2002. The current bridge, rebuilt in 2008 and cared for by the National Trust, is purely a visitor crossing now.
The Giant's Causeway itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, is made up of around 40,000 basalt columns formed by volcanic activity some 50 to 60 million years ago - though Irish legend prefers to credit the giant Finn McCool, who's said to have built the causeway as a path to Scotland to confront a rival giant there.
With real reviews consistently confirming one dedicated driver-guide, Don or Richie, taking a single family for the entire day, this tour also builds in a genuine hour-long stop in Belfast itself as standard - general sightseeing rather than a dedicated Troubles segment, unless you ask your guide for that focus specifically.
