The "Spiaggina" body style you're riding in was Fiat's answer to the Italian Riviera's beach-club set — a doorless, roofless version of the standard 500, fitted with wicker seats and a fabric canopy and built in small numbers from the late 1950s at roughly twice the price of an ordinary 500. It quickly became a status symbol of the era's dolce vita, with Aristotle Onassis and Yul Brynner among the owners photographed riding in one.
The route out of the center passes Porta Romana, one of the few surviving gates from Florence's 13th-century walls — a plaque on it claims an erection date of 1327. Almost everything else of those walls was torn down in the 19th century by the same urban planner, Giuseppe Poggi, who then laid out Piazzale Michelangelo on the hillside above; Porta Romana survived largely because the road beyond it, toward Siena and Rome, was still needed.
From there it's on to Piazzale Michelangelo itself, with the ice bucket and bottle of wine along for the ride and optional stops at San Miniato al Monte or the Etruscan hilltop town of Fiesole — all taken in at the unhurried pace a rare, original vintage car naturally sets.
