The barchetto you'll board belongs to a trade that nearly disappeared. Men called renaioli — from rena, the Italian word for sand — once spent their days on these flat-bottomed boats dredging sand and gravel from the Arno to supply Florence's palazzo builders, alongside fishing and light river transport. The work faded out by the late 1950s as modern methods took over, and by the 1990s only four of the original barchetti were left in the whole city.
In 1995, a dedicated association — I Renaioli — stepped in to restore and preserve those last four boats rather than let them disappear entirely, and today it's the only way to see Florence from the water the way renaioli once did, running trips by reservation from May to September.
Gliding past the base of the Uffizi and under Ponte Vecchio from river level gives you a genuinely different read on buildings most visitors only ever see from street level above — and the glass of chilled Tuscan rosé or white in hand makes the slow pace feel entirely deliberate rather than touristy.
