Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — the focus stays on the Renaissance era specifically, rather than a broad overview.
No — the term 'Renaissance' as a name for this era was coined much later, borrowed by historian Jacob Burckhardt from an 1855 essay by Jules Michelet. Florentines of the 1400s and 1500s had no equivalent label for their own age.

About This Tour

Florence's Renaissance had a very practical financial engine behind it: in 1397, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici moved his family's banking business from Rome to Florence and built it into what became the largest and most respected bank in Europe. His son, Cosimo the Elder, took that financial power and converted it into outright political control of the Florentine Republic starting in 1434 — decades before any Medici held a formal title.
Here's a twist worth knowing before setting out: nobody living through the period this tour covers would have recognized the word 'Renaissance' at all. The label was invented centuries later — French historian Jules Michelet used it in an 1855 essay, and Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt borrowed it for his influential 1860 book, retroactively naming an era that Florentines themselves simply understood as their own time.
A private host can lean into either thread as your questions dictate — the banking and politics behind the art, or the slower 19th-century process by which historians decided this particular stretch of Florentine history deserved a name of its own.
