Florence's historic center covers just 532 hectares, still largely held within the walls the city built in the 14th century, and UNESCO named the whole area a World Heritage Site in 1982 — a genuinely compact, walkable frame that's part of why its skyline, dominated by Brunelleschi's dome, reads as so cohesive through a camera compared to a larger modern city.
That density cuts both ways for photography: the same narrow medieval streets that make for dramatic, tightly framed shots of a church facade or a quiet alley also mean the light changes fast, and a working photographer who knows exactly when a given piazza catches direct sun, or empties out between tour-group waves, is worth more here than almost anywhere else in the city.
Composition tips aside, the real value of walking with a professional rather than shooting alone is pacing: knowing which three or four stops are worth setting up a real shot at, and which are better left for a quick phone photo on the way past.
