The climb to Piazzale Michelangelo passes San Miniato al Monte, one of the oldest churches in Florence — construction began in 1018 over the grave of Saint Minias, an early Christian martyr said to have been beheaded here around 250 AD under the Roman emperor Decius. The facade's geometric green-and-white marble pattern, finished around 1090, was copied decades later on the Duomo and Baptistery, and the 13th-century mosaic above the doorway still shows Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and Minias himself.
The route there threads past real history before the climb even starts. Ponte Vecchio, Florence's oldest bridge, has stood in its current form since 1345, and it was the only crossing over the Arno that the retreating German army left standing when it blew up every other bridge in the city in August 1944.
Piazzale Michelangelo itself only dates to 1869, laid out by architect Giuseppe Poggi along a new scenic ring road, the Viale dei Colli, built where Florence's medieval walls had just been demolished. Reaching it by private golf cart at golden hour means catching the light Poggi's terrace was designed to frame, without timing your own walk up to get there.
