About This Tour

A private nighttime golf cart tour to Florence's hilltop viewpoints, from the Basilica of San Miniato to Piazzale Michelangelo. Set off from just outside the old town to head up to landmark overlooks from the Basilica of San Miniato to Piazzale Michelangelo, stopping to snap photos and learn about the city's history along the way.

From the hilltop after dark, the floodlit tower you'll pick out across the rooftops belongs to the Palazzo Vecchio — construction began in 1299 and the building, originally called the Palazzo della Signoria, was completed by 1322. It has served continuously as Florence's seat of government since the Middle Ages, making the view from Piazzale Michelangelo a look at more than 700 years of unbroken city hall.

San Miniato al Monte, just below the piazzale, is lit for the evening too. Its 13th-century facade mosaic depicts Christ enthroned between the Virgin Mary and Saint Minias, the early Christian martyr the basilica was built over; many architectural historians consider it the finest Romanesque structure in all of Tuscany, and it's one of the few hilltop churches in Florence genuinely visible from across the valley once night falls.

Piazzale Michelangelo itself was carved from this hillside in 1869 by architect Giuseppe Poggi, during the short-lived Risanamento redevelopment that followed Florence's stint as capital of newly unified Italy. A golf cart gets you up to see it lit up after dark without the steep, unlit walk most visitors face from the Oltrarno streets below.
