Fiesole is older than Florence itself. Founded as Vipsul in the 7th century BC, it became one of the earliest and most important urban centers of Etruscan civilization, prospering between the 5th and 2nd centuries BC thanks to its position on trade roads linking central Etruria to the Po Valley — until Rome conquered it in 90 BC and leveled most of its Etruscan buildings.
What survives from the Roman rebuild is genuinely impressive: a theater dating from roughly the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, along with Roman baths and a temple, all still standing in the same archaeological area. The theater remained in active use through at least the 3rd century AD, and today it still hosts performances each summer as part of the Estate Fiesolana festival.
The road up winds past cypresses, olive groves, and historic villas, and that landscape is part of the appeal — a golf cart lets you take in the climb at an easy pace rather than rushing through it. If you choose Piazzale Michelangelo instead, you'll reach the viewpoint architect Giuseppe Poggi laid out in 1869, Florence's own, much younger hilltop overlook.
