The Sant'Ambrogio Market you'll walk through is Florence's oldest, dating to May 29, 1873 — built during the brief years Florence served as capital of unified Italy, on land that had belonged to the nuns of Santa Verdiana. It was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, the same architect behind the larger Mercato Centrale, though on a smaller scale in the same iron-and-glass style.
The neighborhood takes its name from the Chiesa di Sant'Ambrogio, one of the oldest churches in the city, and has worked as a trading hub along the Arno since the Middle Ages, when craftsmen first opened workshops here. It's noticeably less touristy than Florence's more famous markets — locals describe it as a place where the same Florentine families have shopped for generations, grandparents and grandchildren at the same stalls.
Weaving espresso bars, gelato counters, and artisan food shops in between stops at the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio keeps the day balanced between two real reasons to visit Florence — eating well and seeing the landmarks — rather than treating one as a detour from the other.
