Brunelleschi's dome is one of the few landmarks in Florence where the engineering is as remarkable as the view from the top. Construction began on August 7, 1420, and the dome itself was declared complete sixteen years later, in 1436, a span of time that still sounds almost unbelievable for a structure this size. Brunelleschi won the commission with a design that was self-supporting, built without the forest of wooden scaffolding that any dome of this scale would normally have required, an innovation he developed partly by studying ancient Roman buildings and partly through trial and error on site.
When it was finished, it was the largest dome in the world, and remains the largest masonry dome ever built, a record that has stood for nearly 600 years. Brunelleschi's lantern, the small structure crowning the very top that lets light into the interior, wasn't finished until after his death, completed by other hands working from his designs.
Climbing up gives you a close look at the inner workings most visitors to the piazza below never see, including the narrow stairway running between the dome's two shells, an architectural solution Brunelleschi devised specifically to keep the structure lighter and more stable. The payoff at the top is a full panorama over Florence's terracotta rooftops, with Giotto's bell tower and the hills beyond the city laid out in every direction.
