About This Tour
Stroll central Florence with a private guide, taking in the city's most-important monuments, palaces, and churches in a couple of hours. A private guided walk through central Florence, beginning at the Piazza di San Lorenzo and ending at the Ponte Vecchio, taking in the city's most-important monuments, palaces, fashion boutiques, and churches along the way.
Tradition holds that the Basilica di San Lorenzo, where this walk begins, was consecrated by St. Ambrose of Milan on Easter Day in the year 393 — which would make it one of the very oldest church sites in Florence, though the building you actually see today dates to a complete 1419 rebuilding, financed by Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici and designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.
At the opposite end of the route, the Ponte Vecchio has been standing in its current form since 1339-1346, built to replace a bridge the Arno tore away in a disastrous flood in November 1333. It's proven durable since: the bridge held again in November 1966, the worst Arno flood of modern times, even as the water badly damaged the goldsmiths' shops lining it.
Between those two points, the route is deliberately a short, walkable thread through the center rather than an exhaustive survey — enough to get your bearings among the monuments, palaces, and boutiques of central Florence without needing a map for the rest of the trip.
