The Elk River near Fernie has long been regarded as one of British Columbia's best cutthroat rivers for dry flies. The main target is the westslope cutthroat, a native trout identifiable by the red slash under the jaw, typically 12 to 16 inches, with the occasional fish near 20.
The river sees more than 20 different hatches through the season, and the fishery is described as consistent from June through October. A drift boat lets your guide cover more water, with the group fishing alone.
Your guide will explain current regulations and handling practices, which matter for a native species.
