Embu's history starts in 1554 with Jesuits and an indigenous settlement known as M'Boy. The Igreja do Rosário, begun around 1690 under Padre Belchior de Pontes, is one of the most important surviving documents of the Society of Jesus in colonial Brazil and sits at the heart of the historic center.
The town's art reputation developed in the 20th century. A local religious-image sculptor, Cássio M'Boy, won first prize at the 1937 Paris international exposition of art and techniques, and the traditional Art and Handicraft Fair began in 1969. Held on weekends and holidays around Largo 21 de Abril, it brings together more than 800 exhibitors.
If you want the fair itself, plan the trip for a weekend; on weekdays the galleries and studios are the draw and the town is much quieter.
