Overview

A two-day journey into the mountains of Morazán, a former stronghold of the FMLN resistance during the Salvadoran Civil War, visiting the Museo de la Revolución Salvadoreña and the El Mozote memorial alongside the region's rivers and pine forests.

This route focuses on El Salvador's recent history, tracing sites connected to the Salvadoran Civil War (1979–1992) in the Morazán mountains. The El Mozote memorial commemorates the victims of a 1981 massacre during the conflict; Voyzo presents this history plainly and respectfully, as told by local guides and community members from the region.

About This Tour

The El Mozote massacre took place on 11 and 12 December 1981, when the Atlácatl Battalion of the Salvadoran army killed civilians in El Mozote and nearby hamlets in Morazán. Estimates of the death toll vary by source, with figures commonly cited from about 800 to well over 900, and many of the victims were children. In December 2011 the Salvadoran government formally apologised. Today a memorial in the village lists names and ages.

The Salvadoran Civil War lasted from 1979 to 1992, and Morazán was a stronghold of the FMLN resistance. This is why the region's museum in Perquín and its guided stories are told by people who lived through the conflict. They are included here to be understood, not as spectacle, and the route balances them with river, forest and village time.

Visitors should expect a sombre first day and a quieter second one, with time in the pine-forested hills to reflect.
