About This Tour

An overnight camping trip to the summit of Conchagua Volcano in eastern El Salvador, with stargazing, a campfire, and a sunrise over the Gulf of Fonseca. This overnight trip reaches El Salvador's eastern region, around La Unión and the Gulf of Fonseca, a part of the country not covered by Voyzo's other El Salvador routes.

Conchagua towers above the Gulf of Fonseca at the south-eastern tip of El Salvador. It is actually two overlapping stratovolcanoes in one cone: Cerro del Ocotal reaches about 1,225 metres, while the younger-looking Cerro de las Banderas is about 1,133 metres. The town of La Unión lies at its northern foot on an inlet of the gulf.

Across a narrow strait from the mountain sits Conchagüita, a small volcanic island about 505 metres high, and it is toward this island group, with Meanguera among the larger ones, that your sunrise view looks. The gulf is shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, which gives the landscape an unusually international feel.

Because this is a part of the country few tour itineraries reach, an overnight camp here is as much about solitude and a dark sky as it is about the summit view.
