About This Tour
A full week and a half across El Salvador, from San Salvador Volcano and the colonial town of Suchitoto to the Ruta de las Flores, Santa Ana Volcano, and the Pacific surf beaches around El Tunco and La Libertad. This is the fullest of Voyzo's El Salvador routes, tracing the country from the capital and its own volcano through the western highlands to the Pacific coast, entirely with a private English-speaking driver guide and SUV.
Suchitoto is often described as the best-preserved colonial town in El Salvador, and its fortunes were built on indigo, a dye extracted from the Indigofera plant that was once among the colony's most valuable exports; at its peak an ounce of indigo was reportedly worth about as much as an ounce of gold. The workshop visit in this itinerary is a direct link to that history. Its Santa Lucía church, dating to 1853, is the town's best-known landmark.
Just outside town, Los Tercios waterfall tumbles over a wall of hexagonal basalt columns formed by an ancient lava flow, a good reminder that all of this scenery is volcanic. The trip then moves west to Santa Ana volcano, the country's highest point at 2,381 metres, which erupted in October 2005 for the first time since 1904 and still has a crater lake at its summit.
The final stretch runs along the Pacific coast to the surf towns of El Tunco and El Zonte, where black-sand beaches and consistent breaks have made the area a long-standing surf destination.
