Edmonton became Alberta's capital in 1905, and the Alberta Legislature Building, built between 1907 and 1913 in Beaux Arts style, stands on a rise above the North Saskatchewan River near the site of the final Fort Edmonton, a Hudson's Bay Company post. That mix of trading-post history and provincial government shapes much of downtown.
The river valley that runs through the city is one of the largest areas of contiguous urban parkland in North America, about 7,300 hectares. Seeing it from the downtown core helps explain why Edmonton feels greener than its size suggests. Because the route is tailored, your guide can lean into whichever theme interests your group.
