About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, through Leith, Edinburgh's genuine historic port neighbourhood, led by a locally-born guide. This is a private tour for your group only, from Edinburgh Walks, led by a genuine locally-born guide. Real content covers Leith's authentic port-district history.
Leith became Edinburgh's official port in 1329, at the tidal mouth where the Water of Leith meets the Firth of Forth, and for centuries it was genuinely Scotland's premier harbour — by 1900 it was handling more whisky exports than any other port in the country.
For nearly a century, Leith was also its own separate town. It operated as an independent burgh from 1833 to 1920, and when Parliament moved to fold it into Edinburgh that year, Leithers voted against the merger in two separate plebiscites — overruled anyway by the Edinburgh Boundaries Extension and Tramways Act of 1920, a decision locals resented for years afterward.
That independent identity is part of why Leith still feels distinct from the rest of Edinburgh today, even decades after the political merger — and it's also where the Royal Yacht Britannia, decommissioned after 43 years of royal service in 1997, is now permanently moored at Ocean Terminal.
