Stirling Castle's real draw is its Renaissance palace, built for James V in the late 1530s and decorated with the famous 'Stirling Heads' — carved oak medallions created around 1540 in a style borrowed from French and Italian royal courts. It was here, in the castle's Chapel Royal, that Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned on 9 September 1543 at just nine months old. The castle's Great Hall, built earlier under James IV, was in its day the largest hall ever constructed in Scotland, with five fireplaces and four spiral staircases, and has since been carefully restored to its original appearance.
Loch Lomond, the day's second stop, holds its own real record: at roughly 71 square kilometres, it's the largest loch in Great Britain by surface area (Loch Ness, further north, is bigger only by water volume). Since 2002 it has sat at the heart of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Scotland's first national park, with Ben Lomond — at 974 metres, the most southerly Munro in the country — rising directly above its eastern shore.
Travelling between the two in a premium minivan means covering real distance — Stirling and Loch Lomond sit on opposite sides of the central Highland boundary — without losing the day to transfers, so a single private tour can genuinely take in both a working royal palace and one of Scotland's defining natural landscapes.
