About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, with a real kilted guide, tracing the Royal Mile from Holyroodhouse to the Castle. This is a private tour for your group only, with a genuine kilted local guide. The real route runs from Holyroodhouse to the Castle.
The Royal Mile is, almost exactly, one Scots mile long — about 1.81 kilometres, or 1.12 English miles, since the Scots mile used to lay it out was a slightly longer unit of measurement. It's really four streets joined end to end: Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street, and the Canongate, running downhill from the Castle esplanade to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom.
Because medieval Edinburgh was squeezed inside defensive walls, there was nowhere to build but up — the tenement buildings known as "lands" that line the Mile reached unusually tall for their era, with narrow closes and wynds branching off into courtyards and stairwells that have barely changed in outline since the 16th century. Walking the full route end to end means passing through a cross-section of that medieval density alongside the grander civic and royal buildings at either end.
Tracing that route with a guide in traditional Highland dress is its own small piece of living Scottish tradition — the kilt itself has centuries of history as a marker of Scottish identity, and doing the walk in one is as much a part of the experience as the history being told along the way.
