About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, through the genuine Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. This is a private tour for your group only, through the real Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh — one of the UK's genuine major botanic gardens.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was founded in 1670 by two Scottish doctors, Robert Sibbald and Andrew Balfour, as a small physic garden for growing medicinal plants — making it the second-oldest botanic garden in the United Kingdom, after Oxford's, which dates to 1621.
It's moved sites four times over its 350-plus-year history, each move chasing cleaner air and more room: from its original plot near Holyrood, to a second site by the old Nor Loch in 1675, to a third location on the road to Leith in 1763, and finally to its present 70-plus-acre grounds at Inverleith starting in 1820 — with the entire living collection carried across the city by hand and cart over three years before the garden was fully settled there by 1823.
Its Victorian Palm Houses are genuine architectural landmarks in their own right: the original, built in 1834, was the tallest traditional palm house in Britain when it went up, and a larger second Palm House, designed by Robert Matheson and completed in 1858, remains the tallest of its kind in the country today at nearly 22 metres, its sandstone Tuscan-style facade topped with a curved iron-and-glass dome.
